a landmark structure in north west England

The three-pylon cable-stayed Mersey Gateway Bridge is a landmark structure in north west England, providing a much-needed new crossing of the river and acting as a catalyst for growth in the region. COWI led the design joint venture.

Designed for rapid construction and minimal maintenance, the bridge is 2.25km long, with a 1km long cable supported section. Its tallest pylon is 125m high.

Geotechnical engineers optimised the foundation design to minimise work in the environmentally sensitive estuary.

The bridge opened on schedule in October 2017.
