Opened in 1991, the cable-stayed QEII Bridge carries the M25, Europe's busiest motorway, over the River Thames.
After carrying out a full structural assessment, COWI designed bespoke transverse bearings for the bridge, including temporary restraints and new permanent access platforms.
COWI also designed a temporary works over-ramp system which enabled the highway to remain open during the replacement of the bridge's six modular movement joints, saving £23m in road closure charges. This solution won the British Construction Innovation Temporary Works Award in 2015.
