20 miles of tunnels to control sewer overflows

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority is implementing its $2.6 billion long-term control plan for combined sewer overflows, known as the DC Clean Rivers Project (DCCR).

The DCCR is comprised of 20 miles of tunnels to capture and convey wastewater to a nearby treatment center.

As a central part of this project, the Blue Plains Tunnel includes a 25 ft-diameter tunnel, 24,000 ft-long, with bolted/gasketed precast concrete liner, and five shafts.
