Power-to-X (PtX) covers the many pathways which convert renewable energy into green molecules (and sometimes back into energy again). While many sectors can effectively decarbonise with electricity, PtX provides green alternatives to fossil fuels, for sectors which cannot run on electricity alone – for example heavy transport, cement & steel production, and chemical production.

A key PtX product, green hydrogen, is an important fuel in its own right and a main ingredient in the production of other green fuels. Green hydrogen can be combined with nitrogen from the air to produce green ammonia, or combined with captured biogenic carbon to produce synthetic methanol and kerosene.

The potential to displace fossil fuels, assist countries with achieving their climate targets, and decarbonise pollutive industries has captured global attention. The PtX market is growing fast, and is expected to exceed EUR 10 billion by 2050, a massive increase from EUR 0.8 billion today.

At COWI, our role in key PtX projects involves process, electrical, pipeline and infrastructure developments. We have experience from when the market first emerged, serving as a knowledge partner in strategic partnerships, undertaking technical deep dives, and producing concept studies, FEED design and detailed design for PtX facilities.

Our strong in-house competences in process engineering, energy from waste and biomass, and offshore wind allows us to bridge the technical gap to commercial readiness, and contribute to PtX projects at all stages of the value chain.
