Do you have experience configuring, testing and commissioning control systems for high-voltage substations? Would you like to apply your expertise to projects supporting Denmark’s electricity transmission grid? Join COWI as a Substation Control and Automation Specialist.

Develop and commission substation control systems
We are looking for an experienced specialist to work on control and automation systems for Energinet’s 132–400 kV substations. Projects range from new substations to extensions, refurbishment and replacement of systems at existing sites.
You will design, configure, test and commission substation control systems, including remote terminal units (RTUs), bay control units (BCUs) and human–machine interfaces (HMIs). Working closely with other specialists, you will ensure that these systems operate correctly and integrate with the substation’s primary equipment, protection systems and communication infrastructure.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Design and configure substation control and monitoring functions in accordance with functional requirements and customer specifications.
  • Configure, test and commission RTUs, bay control units and HMIs.
  • Configure and verify communication interfaces between control devices, protection equipment and remote control systems.
  • Plan and perform functional and integration testing to verify control functions, signal exchange and correct operation of system interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot configuration, communication and interface issues in collaboration with other technical specialists.
  • Prepare and maintain configuration documentation, test procedures and test records.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with colleagues responsible for protection, communication systems, electrical design and primary equipment
  • Undertake the designated on-site role of “holdleder” when required and subject to the relevant qualifications and authorisation.

Your expertise
You take a systematic approach to configuration, testing and troubleshooting. You work independently, pay close attention to technical detail and collaborate effectively with colleagues, customers and suppliers. You understand how individual devices and interfaces contribute to the operation of the complete substation control system.

You will also bring:

  • A relevant qualification in electrical engineering or an equivalent technical background, combined with at least five years of relevant experience with control systems for high-voltage substations.
  • Demonstrated experience configuring and testing substation control equipment from multiple manufacturers.
  • Practical experience with IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 60870-5-103 and IEC 61850 communication protocols and standards.
  • A sound understanding of the interfaces between substation control systems, protection equipment and high-voltage primary equipment.
  • Experience with functional testing, system integration and commissioning of substation control systems.
  • Professional proficiency in Danish and English, both written and spoken.
  • The ability to obtain the required security clearance and meet the qualification and authorisation requirements for acting as “holdleder” at high-voltage substations.

Your place of work
Depending on project requirements, you may work from one of COWI’s offices in Denmark, at Energinet project locations or partly from home. Testing and commissioning activities will require attendance at the relevant project sites. Travel within Denmark is expected.
