New signature structure connects thriving urban area to natural green spaces

19.09.2018

The replacement Walterdale Bridge in Canada is a new iconic structure, connecting the vibrant downtown Edmonton area to the extensive river valley parks.

Edmonton in Canada is a rapidly developing area. To meet the city’s strategic goal to create sustainable growth and prioritise the placement of natural and public spaces, the new Walterdale Bridge has officially opened.

Ultimately, this new bridge will reduce traffic delays, improve operations and safety, and create greater access to trails and green urban spaces for all Edmontonians to enjoy.

The three-lane arch bridge spans 230 m over the North Saskatchewan River and was designed by COWI in collaboration with DIALOG.

In line with the Transportation Master Plan, the City opted for three-lanes instead of four for vehicle traffic in order to enhance the pedestrian and cycling experience with an elegant, curving shared-use path on one side and a sidewalk on the other.

To reduce the impact on the environment, an arch bridge was selected as the preferred structural form to eliminate the need for permanent in-river piers.

In order to maximise overall transportation system efficiency and support their urban planning, liveability, financial, economic and environmental sustainability goals, Edmonton’s Transportation Master Plan has prioritised alternative methods of transportation, including increased public transit services and more active transportation options such as walking and cycling.
