Lusail development, Qatar

The new land development is located along the shoreline north of Doha and covers an area of about 21 km². The project has transformed the shoreline through dredging and reclamation, creating new islands, access channels and beaches.

The fully developed new neighbouring will include low and high rise residential housing for about 200,000 inhabitants. Further, the development will include business, corporate and mixed use areas, as well as quality beaches with top class hotels, golf courses, and an entertainment district. The main stadium for the football World Cup in 2022 will be located in the Lusail Development.

From August 2004 to January 2006, COWI completed planning and design activities of the marine and earthworks for Lusail Development. In February 2006, the owner entered a contract with the Chinese contractor Sinohydro for construction of the marine works. The works were completed early 2009 with COWI performing site supervision.

In 2006, COWI in cooperation with Halcrow, Hyder and David Adamson was selected to design and supervise all infrastructures for this multi-billion dollar waterfront development project. The construction of the infrastructure works is ongoing.
