Batumi Technological University Tower in Georgia

The city Batumi in Georgia, close to the Black Sea, is one of the most dynamically developing cities of the former Soviet Union.

The first skyscraper with an integrated Ferris wheel has been constructed at the Technological University in Batumi. COWI completed the design review on the construction of the impressive architectural building.

Inside the Batumi tower are offices, but on the outside, at an altitude of 100 meters, the tower features a ferris wheel with eight air-conditioned cabins that can hold up to 40 people. It is the first of its kind in the world.

This unusual feature, along with an 85 meter mast with a sail at the top, makes the building a challenging construction which has required wind tunnel tests to determine the loads and accelerations on the tower.

COWI was appointed to carry out a full design check of the structures. This included building a new FEM model in ETABS and SAFE from which the design checks could be carried out by comparing results and member sizes.

Furthermore, the building is located in a moderate seismic zone on soil which liquefies under an earthquake. This was one of the largest challenges on the project and led to a soil improvement strategy right underneath the tower in order to prevent the soil liquefaction.
