reducing up to 46% fossil carbon dioxide emissions

Petroleum company Preem’s Evolution Diesel is a fuel that reduces up to 46% fossil carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional diesel, thanks to the raw material of tall oil, a product from the forestry industry.

A challenge for Preem is that the cold Swedish climate severely restricts the amount of green tall oil or other renewable fuel that can be processed together with the crude oil.

In 2013 Preem engaged COWI to assist with the expansion of the Green Hydro Treater (GHT) facility at their refinery in Gothenburg. The project included a new factory line and reactor.

The expanded facility enables Preem to modify the chemical structure of the tall oil molecules to improve its cold properties making it possible to increase the proportion of renewable fuel in the diesel.
