PROTECTING ONGOING CONSTRUCTION FROM WAVES

Ports and marine structures Solutions

The Al Faw Grand Port in Iraq is a major port development project for the Republic of Iraq Ministry of Transportation. During construction, a breakwater was needed to shelter the work area from the waves. A major challenge in designing this breakwater was dealing with a 20m thick layer of soft clay as the upper foundation.

The solution was an 8 km long western breakwater constructed as a rubble mound structure, in water depths up to 8m. A 45,000 m2 staging pier was also designed and constructed at the end of the breakwater to store construction materials and a logistics camp.
