Designing a data centre in a city centre

Skygard data centre in Oslo is an example of how we work. Skygard is not designed to only deliver on the fundamentals – data safety and operational reliability – it will also break new grounds in environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Data centres use vast amounts of electricity for servers and cooling, and to be more sustainable, Skygard is designed with energy efficiency in mind. It uses renewable energy sources, and surplus heat from the servers will be integrated into Oslo's district heating system.

With the city location in Hovinbyen in Oslo, Skygard has also chosen an innovative approach to the building itself. The existing industrial brownfield area is being transformed into an open recreational area with minimal impact on existing biodiversity and a contributor to urban greening.

Tomorrow’s solutions today

Moving from an old to a modern data centre can reduce power requirements by 50–70%. Furthermore, utilising surplus heat from the servers for district heating will bring down the environmental impact of centres like Skygard.

These moves towards more sustainable and energy-efficient solutions are necessary – not only to meet European regulatory requirements, but also because it is the right way to secure a liveable future for all.

At COWI, we combine deep environmental impact knowledge with engineering innovation to achieve the best available solutions for the communities of tomorrow. We help our customers design future-proof, sustainable solutions that consider the environmental, social and governance aspects of an inclusive digital future.

Skygard is a visionary project that points to a future when the energy consumption and land use of data centres will experience increased scrutiny. By involving other professional disciplines, we look into greener power provision, like the design of wind farms, solar solutions and Power-to-X renewables, and how these technologies can help power industries with high energy consumption.
