COWI is an international consulting group within engineering, architecture, economics, energy and environmental science.
In North America, we offer planning, design and program management services, delivering cost-effective and constructible solutions within transportation, water, renewable energy, federal infrastructure and climate resiliency.
Supported by COWI’s worldwide staff of 7,500, we have around 500 skilled employees working on projects in the United States and Canada.
COWI in North America works primarily within transportation, water, climate resiliency, renewable energy and federal infrastructure. We draw on nearly a century of expertise, and with our 7,500 experts worldwide, we can work around the clock to deliver projects for our customers.
COWI’s presence in North America dates back to 1988 with the acquisition of Ben C Gerwick Engineering, a company recognized for its innovation in the design and construction of marine structures. This was followed by the acquisition of Buckland and Taylor Ltd., Ocean & Coastal Consultants and Jenny Engineering to provide advanced expertise in bridges, marine, and tunnel structures across North America.
COWI is a trusted partner in planning, designing and delivering transportation infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and supports sustainable growth across North America. Drawing on decades of global expertise and strong local presence, we support public and private customers throughout the project lifecycle.
Our multidisciplinary teams combine technical excellence, digital innovation and resiliency-focused design to deliver safe, efficient and future-ready solutions that meet today’s mobility needs and tomorrow’s challenges.
Across North America, COWI delivers integrated water infrastructure solutions that protect people, communities and the environment. We design and support critical assets, such as dams and hydraulic structures, along with complex water and wastewater tunnels that ensure reliable service today and resiliency for the future. We enter into close dialogue with our customers and apply our global expertise to secure solutions that will address the most pressing water challenges of our time.
COWI works closely with federal agencies across North America in caring for infrastructure of national importance. In Canada, we work with Parks Canada to inspect and maintain bridge assets that ensure safe access while preserving iconic landscapes for future generations. In the United States, we partner with the U.S. Navy on pier and harbor projects, delivering robust, resilient marine infrastructure that supports long-term performance and responsible stewardship of public assets.
COWI partners with customers across North America to advance the transition to resilient, low-carbon energy systems. We deliver engineering and advisory services for large-scale offshore wind projects, green fuels, microgrids and waste-to-energy facilities. Combining global expertise with local insight, our experts support projects from early planning through delivery, helping customers reduce emissions and strengthen energy security. We create future-ready solutions that accelerate the shift to low-carbon power while benefiting both local communities, businesses and the environment.
COWI supports customers across North America in strengthening resiliency to climate change through integrated coastal protection and flood control solutions. We work with communities and authorities to assess risk, adapt infrastructure, and protect people, assets and ecosystems from extreme weather, floods and rising sea levels. With our technical expertise, we help deliver robust, adaptable strategies and engineered solutions that perform today and respond to future climate conditions.
Juneau Creek Bridge in Alaska
COWI delivered the construction engineering that enabled the 950-foot Juneau Creek Bridge to be launched across a remote Alaskan canyon as a single 7-million-pound steel structure. Part of the Sterling Highway upgrade, the bridge will improve safety, mobility and reliability while reducing environmental impacts and supporting wildlife connectivity.
Toronto subway – Ontario Line
COWI is contributing to the largest expansion in Toronto’s subway history. The 15.6 km Ontario Line is expected to serve nearly 400,000 daily riders. We are delivering architectural and engineering design solutions for two new stations, King-Bathurst and Queen-Spadina. This transformative project will enhance connectivity for over 227,000 residents and reduce travel times by up to 40 minutes.
Fargo Moorhead
The Fargo–Moorhead metropolitan area has experienced increasingly frequent flooding over the past century, prompting a major infrastructure effort to protect communities on both sides of the Red River. The USD 3 billion Fargo‑Moorhead Diversion Project includes a 30‑mile diversion channel, road and rail crossings, and multiple hydraulic structures.
Syphon Reservoir Improvement Project
The Syphon Reservoir Improvement Project for Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) in Southern California will increase recycled water storage ten-fold to 5,000 acre-feet, supporting water recycling and reuse efforts. The project includes a new embankment dam, intake and outlet works, a spillway and a water treatment plant, and it will strengthen long-term drought resiliency for 600,000 people.
6th Street Viaduct in Los Angeles
COWI engineered a complex 3,060 ft jointless concrete bridge replacing a seismically vulnerable viaduct over Freeway 101 and the LA River. The bridge features walkways, bicycle lanes and access to recreational spaces, enhancing connectivity while meeting high sustainability and environmental standards.
Empire Wind offshore wind farm
COWI is providing detailed design and installation support for the 2 GW Empire Wind offshore wind farm off Long Island, a joint venture between Equinor and bp. This project will power one million homes and significantly advance New York’s goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% zero-emission energy by 2040.
