COWI partners with customers across North America to advance the transition to resilient, low-carbon energy systems.
We deliver engineering and advisory services for large-scale offshore wind projects, green fuels, microgrids, and waste-to-energy facilities. Combining global expertise with local insight, our experts support projects from early planning through delivery, helping customers reduce emissions and strengthen energy security.
We create future-ready solutions that accelerate the shift to low-carbon power while benefitting both local communities, businesses, and the environment.
Vineyard Wind
Vineyard Wind engaged COWI to support the development and delivery of the United States’ first large-scale offshore wind farm. The 800 MW project will deliver electricity to 400,000 households in Massachusetts.
COWI carried out due diligence of the Seaview Boatworks site in Bridgeport, assessing its suitability for turbine, platform, and transition piece storage and logistics. We assessed flood risk, water levels, live loading criteria, vessel types, and quay and upland requirements. As owner’s engineer, we also provided comprehensive services, including conceptual design of the full power system, electrical studies, tender preparation, EPCI package administration, and oversight of design, fabrication, and installation.
Microgrids for the US Army Corps of Engineers
COWI evaluated alternatives to coal and fossil-fuel energy systems at four US military installations, assessing renewable options including solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal.
Work included establishing baseline fossil fuel usage, developing clean energy replacement concepts, performing techno economic analyses, and recommending low-/no-emission solutions. COWI also contributed to environmental assessments (NEPA) for selected alternatives and provided feasibility and cost insights to support the Army’s transition toward clean energy.
Empire Wind
Empire Wind is a major 2 GW offshore wind development off the coast of Long Island, New York. Powering one million New York homes, the project will help the state achieve its renewable energy goals. COWI is providing full lifecycle foundation engineering, including concept development, front-end engineering design, and detailed design for approximately 140 driven monopiles, supported by structural, electrical, and advanced geotechnical engineering.
Our services also included advanced geotechnical analysis, integrated load studies, installation engineering, and port and marine terminal assessments to support fabrication staging, operations and maintenance base siting, and landfall considerations.
Waste to energy in Barbados
COWI has been awarded the contract to deliver high-level design and construction supervision services for a new waste-to-energy facility at the Port of Bridgetown in Barbados. The project supports the port’s ambition to become a leading green maritime hub in the Caribbean.
Replacing the existing incinerator, the facility will use a modern wet-dry incineration system and a steam Rankine cycle turbine to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Working with a global network of experts, COWI will help deliver an environmentally responsible solution for managing waste from cruise ships and port operations.
Transportation
COWI is a trusted partner in planning, designing and delivering transportation infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and supports sustainable growth across North America. Drawing on decades of global expertise and strong local presence, we support public and private customers throughout the project lifecycle.
Water
Across North America, COWI delivers water infrastructure solutions, designing dams, hydraulic structures, and water and wastewater tunnels through close customer collaboration, applying global expertise to ensure reliable service, long‑term resiliency and solutions to water challenges.
