New COWI head office with emphasis on renovation and sustainability

03 November 2025

Recycling and renovation will be key themes as the consulting engineering group COWI relocates its head office. The new building will incorporate the latest knowledge in refurbishment, reuse and modern office facilities, and it is being developed in collaboration with Danish pension fund and property owner Velliv.

“At COWI, we want to lead the way in renovation, reuse and more sustainable construction solutions. We aim to provide our employees with state-of-the-art facilities while maintaining our head office in Lyngby, north of Copenhagen, which is known for excellent transport links, proximity to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and a vibrant business environment,” says COWI's CEO Jens Højgaard Christoffersen.

Currently, about 1,800 of COWI’s approximately 7,500 employees work from the head office. After exploring several options, COWI has found a future-proof solution nearby. Adjacent to its current office near Lyngby Station, a large office building, owned by Danish pension company, Velliv, recently became vacant.

Together with Arkitema and Velliv, COWI has designed plans to renovate existing buildings with a new architectural structure. This represents a significant investment in creating enhanced workspaces.

A vision for more sustainable construction
Renovation, refurbishment and reuse are gaining increasing attention as sustainable alternatives to new building in the construction industry. COWI’s approach reflects this focus, as renovating and reusing existing materials – especially heavy load-bearing structures – is better for the climate and conserves natural resources.

The project goes beyond mere refurbishment. Plans include extensions and covered areas based on existing structural frameworks to give the building an entirely new design and appearance and total 33,000 m². The project leverages COWI’s extensive expertise, with engineers and Arkitema architects deeply involved. Completion is scheduled for 2028.

"Our new head office will bring together our expertise in renovation, transformation, material recycling, optimal heat and energy consumption, and other sustainable solutions. At the same time, we will invest in creating state-of-the-art office facilities that provide optimal conditions for our employees".
