After two decades serving as Copenhagen’s first driverless underground transportation system, the M1 and M2 metro lines, are to have their signalling systems and trains replaced, and Metroselskabet has appointed an advisory team consisting of COWI, WSP and Egis to assist with the project.
In a joint venture with WSP, Egis and other subconsultants including Strides, Nordic Signal and Implement, COWI will assist Metroselskabet in replacing the signalling systems and driverless trains – while the metro is in operation.
The Copenhagen metro is a prime example of a reliable and attractive driverless public transportation system, and we look forward to contributing to providing passengers with new, modern trains and efficient service well into the future
Pietro Zingarelli, Project Director at COWI
Pietro Zingarelli further adds:
“In a strong joint venture with WSP and Egis, we will draw on our extensive experiences from similar metro systems in Singapore, Lyon, Lille and Paris to ensure a seamless passenger experience while transitioning to modern trains and systems. We are proud to continue our long-standing and close collaboration with Metroselskabet to enhance mobility for an increasing number of passengers.”
Strategically, this project has enormous significance across the globe, says Jesper Asferg, Executive Business Development Director for Infrastructure in COWI:
“We are privileged to partner with one of the world’s leading metro companies that is paving the way for a more driverless global future. Many mass transit systems across the globe will need similar transformations, and this project is a testament to our combined competencies and experiences to support big cities worldwide in their endeavours to make fast, safe and efficient public transportation.”
Carsten Heine Lund, Senior Vice President of Transportation in Business Line Denmark, says:
“I am immensely delighted that Metroselskabet has entrusted us with getting the M1/M2 metro lines ready for the future while ensuring a seamless, consistent and dependable service for passengers,” he says and adds: “It’s the heart of the metro and a challenge that will leverage our competencies and expertise for the future.”
Rasmus Walter, Director of Transportation and Infrastructure with WSP, says:
“It’s an important task for WSP Denmark, which lets us combine our global expertise with our local presence. We look forward to getting started on the project and to a successful collaboration with both Metroselskabet and our partners.”
