COWI has been appointed as a key engineering partner on Iceland's new National Sports Hall in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, one of the country’s most significant investments in sports and community infrastructure.
Jointly developed by the Icelandic state and the City of Reykjavík, the project will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team led by ÍAV, COWI, ASK Architects, LPO, Ísloft and Landhönnun.
The new arena will be a modern 19,000 m² multi-purpose venue, designed to meet international standards for sporting competitions and large-scale events while also supporting everyday use by sports organisations, schools and the general public. The facility will accommodate 8,600 seated spectators and up to 12,000 people during major events.
The project represents a major step forward for sports and community wellbeing in Iceland. It will enhance public health, expand opportunities for children and young people to engage in sport, improve access to high-quality recreational facilities, and reinforce Laugardalur’s position as Iceland’s leading destination for sports and recreation. The venue will also increase Iceland’s capacity to host international events, creating long-term social, cultural and economic value.
COWI will contribute multidisciplinary expertise across structural engineering, geotechnics, mechanical and HVAC systems, electrical systems, lighting, acoustics, fire safety, sustainability, life cycle assessment and BREEAM certification.
Construction is expected to begin following the completion of statutory procedures.
