Meet Ivan Liu

"I find it really intriguing to work in structural engineering for design and construction projects because each project is always challenging in its own unique way."

Ivan Liu, Senior Bridge Engineer

I find it fascinating to see how a structural solution for a project is shaped through multiple variables, such as cost, scheduling, political, and technical considerations. You need to make all these factors come together. It is always fun to go through the non-linear journey of finding the best solution for each of these challenges and completing the project.

I think this is what attracts people to our industry and what drives them to advance their careers in structural engineering.

COWI is a recognized industry consultant in transportation, water, climate resiliency, renewable energy, and federal infrastructure across North America. This strong market position has resulted in several major ongoing projects and a robust pipeline of future opportunities that align closely with COWI's technical expertise and strategic focus areas.

Our projects range in size, and we are working on some of the largest infrastructure projects in USA and Canada, such as the Second Avenue Subway expansion in New York City and the Fargo–Moorhead Area Diversion project.

"COWI specifically chases projects that are complex and challenging in nature to keep our engineering staff interested, engaged, and satisfied with their work."

Ivan Liu, Senior Bridge Engineer

Our office in Tallahassee, Florida, primarily works on bridge projects that involve either design engineering or construction engineering. For me, construction engineering projects are particularly engaging, as they allow us to work closely with contractors to analyze how a structure will actually be built, including any temporary works required along the way.

It offers the other side of the coin compared to traditional design engineering, and it gives a great perspective into how a bridge evolves from your design on paper into a completed structure.
