Meet Mike Wong

"I find it deeply rewarding to collaborate with a technical team that is willing to challenge the status quo and push the boundaries in our industry."

Mike Wong, Senior Project Manager

At COWI, innovation is at the heart of what we do. We take on specialised projects that demand advanced expertise and innovative solutions. BIM is becoming a requirement for large transportation projects, but I also support project teams in implementing BIM on small-scale projects to improve the project delivery process.

Since I joined COWI in Vancouver in 2014, I have had the privilege of working on both engaging local projects and signature structures across North America.

At COWI, we understand the importance of strong relationships within our project teams, with our customers and among project stakeholders. I believe that collaboration and effective communication drive the success of multidisciplinary projects.

This collaborative focus enhances our project outcomes while fostering a shared sense of purpose, passion and commitment among all involved.

"I work alongside bridge specialists with decades of experience who are eager to share their experience and insights."

Mike Wong, Senior Project Manager

As a project manager, I get to work with customers to push for sustainability. A driving factor for me is knowing that structural solutions and material selection can have a far greater impact on reducing global carbon emissions than the day-to-day impacts I can make in my personal life.

COWI is leading the industry in a push for greater sustainability. In North America, we are actively learning from our Scandinavian and UK colleagues how to apply sustainable solutions to the transportation sector.

During my time in COWI, I have had plenty of opportunities to work in some of Canada’s stunning wildlife locations. Earlier in my career, I provided field supervision for a superstructure replacement on the Clairvaux Creek Bridge in Jasper National Park. That experience allowed me to deepen my understanding of the challenges contractors encounter during construction.

Another of my career highlights was managing COWI’s annual inspection programme for structures in the Western National Parks of Canada. I would spend weeks at a time in beautiful locations like Banff National Park and Pacific Rim National Park, conducting detailed bridge inspections.

"We have plenty of opportunities to find common ground outside the office and get to know our colleagues.

This includes activities like weekly hikes up the Grouse Grind, attending Vancouver Whitecaps soccer games, and going on backpacking trips in the beautiful BC mountains right in our backyard."

Jessica Ng, Bridge Engineer

"It is incredibly rewarding driving over a bridge designed by our team. Contributing to a vital connection brings a strong sense of pride and fulfilment."

The trusting culture and supportive environment have significantly influenced my tenure at COWI. My colleagues consistently support each other to balance workloads and share knowledge, fostering an environment of ongoing growth and development.

Having relocated to Vancouver for its outdoor lifestyle, I appreciate how COWI's culture emphasises a healthy work-life balance. With the support of our personal and wellness benefits, I can keep my mind fresh and my quads burning after a day on the ski slopes.

COWI also offers meaningful opportunities for community engagement. I had the incredible chance to participate in the Bridges to Prosperity bridge build in Bolivia.

That experience allowed my colleagues and me to share our love of bridges with local children while enhancing the safety of a crucial pedestrian river crossing.
