New Bodø Airport, Norway

Strengthening civil mobility and national preparedness

About

Challenge

Bodø Airport is one of Norway’s largest and most complex transportation infrastructure projects. The current airport must remain operational during the redevelopment, and given its picturesque location by the sea and mountains, the already complex task must also address substantial nature and wildlife considerations.

Solution

In a collaboration between COWI, PEAB and Avinor, we plan and design the new runway, taxiways, aircraft stands and all external infrastructure in parallel with the ongoing work on the site. The redevelopments will increase the size of Bodø Airport, adding new features in advanced automation, robotics and smart operating systems designed to set new standards for future airports.

Value

The existing airport in Bodø is located close to the city's urban area. As Bodø continues to grow and aims to become an even more significant regional development centre, there is a need to move the airport further away from the city. At the same time, the airport needs upgrading and expansion to meet current and future needs. When in full operation, the new airport will be capable of handling 2.3 million passengers annually.

Shaping Norway’s future airport through a partnering model

The work on the new airport is based on a partnering model between PEAB, COWI and Avinor. Jointly, we developed and optimised the solutions and agreed on a target cost for the execution phase.

The total contract for execution includes final design work, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning. As engineering consultant, COWI contributes expertise across the planning, design and execution of the project.

The scope includes construction of the runway, taxiways, aircraft stands and all external infrastructure, including demolition, blasting, sea embankment, grading, infrastructure works, paving, airfield lighting, safety systems and landside development.

The project is a collaboration between Avinor, Bodø Municipality and the Norwegian Armed Forces, and represents a major upgrade of critical infrastructure vital for both civil mobility and national emergency preparedness.
