The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link, Denmark and Germany
Creating a fast, efficient and safe connection between Denmark and Germany, linking Scandinavia and continental Europe while cutting travel time drastically.
An immersed tunnel, which will become the world’s longest for road and rail, made of enormous concrete elements.
The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link is set to transform travel between Denmark and Germany by replacing the current 45-minute ferry crossing with a tunnel that will cut journey times drastically to just seven minutes by train and ten minutes by car.

Design of tunnel structures, including the permanent works for the immersed tunnel, for ramps and portals and for the land works connecting the link to the existing and future road and rail networks.
The Fehmarn Belt connection presents multiple technical challenges. The sheer size of the prefabricated tunnel elements requires state-of-the-art solutions for transportation and immersion. This demands a design optimised to maximise production efficiency without compromising quality.
Geotechnical and foundation complexities further add to the immense challenge, demanding experienced engineering to secure stability.
Each of the 79 prefabricated elements is a whopping 217 metres long – in total, they take up the space of 50 cars after one another. The design demands meticulous attention to detail, especially for rebar placement, to enable rapid production and ensure structural integrity.
In addition to the prefabricated so-called standard tunnel elements, the project features ten specially designed two-storey segments, housing complex systems, such as pumps and sewage facilities, underscoring the engineering sophistication required.
As the world’s longest immersed road and rail tunnel, spanning 18 kilometres, this landmark project will not only boost cross-border connectivity but also support greener transportation through electric freight trains and promoting public transportation, reducing environmental impact.
Upon completion, the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will bring Europe closer together. Passengers will benefit from significant travel time savings, shaving about an hour off their journey to visit loved ones or conduct business. For freight transport, the connection offers an efficient alternative that enhances supply chains across borders.
