As digitalisation increases, our lives become more dependent on powerful servers and secure data storage. To meet the growing need, Telenor, Hafslund and HitecVision are building a new state-of-the-art data centre.
Skygard, as the centre is called, is not situated in a remote industrial location but in the middle of Oslo’s biggest development area, Hovinbyen.
Not only is the Skygard data centre designed to deliver on the fundamentals – data safety and operational reliability – it will also break new grounds in environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Data centres use vast amounts of electricity for servers and cooling, and to be more sustainable, Skygard is designed with energy efficiency in mind. It uses renewable energy sources, and surplus heat from the servers will be integrated into Oslo's district heating system.
With the city location in Hovinbyen in Oslo, Skygard has also chosen an innovative approach to the building itself. The existing industrial brownfield area is being transformed into an open recreational area with minimal impact on existing biodiversity and a contributor to urban greening.
In Buildings and Industry we are currently looking for specialists within several disciplines - especially experts with pharma and data cenre experience.
Specialist in Data Center & Industry
“I get to work on prestigious projects where I make a real difference in the green transition. At the same time, I experience constant personal and professional development.”
… coming up with the solutions that make data centres like Skygard even more energy-efficient and sustainable.
Whether you get to work with data centres, pharma or the energy sector, COWI offers professionally challenging projects. With our focus on big buildings, we guarantee plenty of development opportunities for engineers, specialists and project managers.
Skygard is owned by Norwegian companies Telenor, Hafslund, HitecVision and Analysys Mason Nordic, and will provide colocation facilities for multiple tenants.
"With the investment in Skygard and other data centres, we will provide Norway with a much-needed data centre capacity that prioritises national security, data safety and sustainability. The current geopolitical situation has made the need for secure solutions more important, but there is also an urgent need to improve the environmental footprint of data centres. With Skygard, we address all these issues and set a new standard for the future."
Elise Lindeberg, CEO, Skygard
COWI has extensive experience with data centres in the Nordic markets and has been chosen as partner to ensure that Skygard will comply with all local legislation and relevant regulations, de-risking the project from the initial phases to hand-over.
Moving from an old to a modern data centre can reduce power requirements by 50-70%. Furthermore, utilising surplus heat from the servers for district heating will bring down the environmental impact of centres like Skygard.
These moves towards more sustainable and energy-efficient solutions are necessary. Both because European regulations demand it, but also because it is the right way to secure a liveable future for all.
We combine deep environmental impact knowledge with engineering innovation to achieve the best available solutions for the communities of tomorrow. We focus on helping our customers design future-proof, sustainable solutions that consider the environmental, social and governance aspects of an inclusive digital future.
Skygard is a visionary project that points to a future where the energy consumption and land use of data centres will experience increased scrutiny. By including other disciplines, we look into greener power provision, like the design of wind farms, solar solutions and Power-to-X renewables, and how these technologies can help power industries with high energy consumption.
Together with customers, partners and colleagues, we shape a future where people and societies grow and flourish. We do that by co-creating sustainable and beautiful solutions that improve the quality of life for people today and many generations ahead.
