“As project manager I have to understand enough to know how different disciplines affect each other and how we get things to work together.”
Vinojan Vethanayagam , Project Manager, Buildings and Industry
I am a project manager working with energy and buildings on large industrial projects. What I really do is to understand our customers and help them find solutions based on where they are and want to be in future.
The projects I work on are large and cover almost all disciplines in the area of buildings – from energy and cooling to infrastructure and even roads. As project manager I have to understand enough about the different disciplines to know how they affect each other and how we get things to work together.
If you want to join Vino, check out these open positions in Buildings and Industry:
Industrial customers are typically experts in their own field but know little or nothing about buildings. That means we get to put all our competencies in play and act as true advisors. We talk to the operating personnel about their requirements and wishes, and we talk to the project owners about their ambitions.
Our job is to listen and add our professional expertise to define need and nice – and then help the customers understand what the best solutions are. Sometimes the strict need isn’t enough, and we have to build the case for what more should be done.
Most of my projects are within pharma and carbon capture where ambitions are high and customers work with a long-term perspective. We work with technologies that are still being developed, some are in very early stages, things change and evolve fast, and we have to do the same.
I always say “we” because we work as a team. Apart from the actual project team working together on a daily basis, there is always someone I can ask, a specialist or an expert who knows everything about a specific topic or field, and who is happy to share their knowledge and experience. That way I also experience constant professional and personal development.
