Automated baggage drop off was one of the new technologies presented at the exhibition.

At the Passenger Terminal Expo in Barcelona, COWI Norway and Avinor presented the automation of baggage delivery at Norwegian airports. With this technology, baggage drop off can be completed in only 12 seconds.

Passenger Terminal Expo and Conference is the world’s leading international airport terminal conference and exhibition – this year with focus on technology and how it can be used to connect and interact with the passenger.

COWI has had an exhibition stand at the expo for several years. At this year's expo, which took place in Barcelona, March 25-27, COWI showcased two new terminals being built at Norway's two largest airports, the new Terminal T2 at Gardermoen, Oslo, and Terminal T3 in Bergen. Both airports have implemented automated common-use bag drop to accommodate passenger growth in existing terminals.

COWI has been advisor for the Norwegian Civil Aviation, Avinor, in connection with the development and selection of the automated bag drop systems for Norwegian airports. At the expo, Yngvar Sundsfjord, Chief Project Manager at COWI Norway gave a presentation about Avinor's experience over the last two years, during which the bag drop system has processed more than five million pieces of baggage with a success rate above 99 % for the system.

"With the new system, the passenger uses about four seconds in average to scan the bag tag until the baggage is accepted and transferred to the baggage handling system. In total, the average time is about 12 seconds from the customer has scanned the baggage tag until the baggage is delivered onto the conveyor for the baggage sorting system," says Yngvar Sundsfjord.

The automated common-use bag drop is a very important aspect for Avinor, in order to handle the passenger growth until the new terminals are ready in Oslo and Bergen in 2017. The design of the new terminals for passenger processing is based upon automation, self-service and common use infrastructure, as this will give flexibility for handling passengers of all airlines at every bag drop and check-in counter in the terminals.
