For the past five or six years, I’ve been working on large building projects in the industrial sector, mostly within the decarbonisation of energy supply, green fuels and carbon capture. Working with relatively new and developing technologies is really exciting but means we need to be flexible and adaptable in our projects.
It also means there are a lot of things which haven’t been done before, and I have to stay on top of everything and be able to quantify options so the customer can make informed decisions.
For me, personally, this role means I am learning all the time as each project has new challenges.

I am lucky that I have so many great colleagues who are specialists in their respective fields. No matter what my query is, I can always find someone who knows a lot about that field and can help me understand it. Since I can’t possibly know everything, I need to talk to people to find out.
In my area we do what I call 'the wrapping' – that’s the foundations, buildings, roads drainage infrastructure etc. for the technical facilities. Because the technical solutions can be relatively new technologies, we need to be prepared for changes in the project and many iterations in the design. We can be certain that there will be many changes in our design from concept to completion, and we must be prepared for this.
Part of my role is to act as a ‘filter’ to ensure that the specialists get the information they need to focus on a flexible and robust design without being disturbed by 'noise' in the project. I need to keep focus on the big picture but break it down so that the different disciplines can work together to ensure that we deliver to expectations.
