"What I really liked about starting out at COWI was being trusted with meaningful technical work right from the start."
Dorota Szwoch , Hydrogeologist
While many graduates face a slow start before being given more advanced tasks, I’ve felt that the knowledge and skills I gained during university and internships are genuinely valued and put to good use, always with the reassurance of experienced teammates guiding me along the way.
Practice is a great way to learn, so being involved in complex projects early on has been both a great opportunity and a strong motivation to grow and develop quickly.
Our team has a great culture where every opinion counts. Every voice is heard and respected, whether you have 20 years or just six months of experience. That openness gives me the confidence to speak up and contribute my own ideas.
I work in the Swedish market, which has given me insight into the complex impacts of climate change in a Northern European context. While global warming is often intuitively linked to a decrease in water resources, including groundwater, the reality is more nuanced. In Scandinavia, for instance, melting glaciers can have the opposite effect, leading to an excess of water in certain regions.
The hydrogeological response to climate change depends on a range of interacting factors, such as latitude and topographical setting, resulting in varying patterns and dynamics across different areas. This dynamic directly affects the infrastructure we work on at COWI, making the role of a hydrogeologist responsible, challenging and engaging.

“Until quite recently, nitrogen removal wasn’t part of the scope when you designed wastewater treatment solutions in Norway. Now, we are busy catching up to save our fjords.”
