I am working on large building projects in the industrial sector, mostly within the decarbonisation of energy supply, green fuels and carbon capture. We do what I call 'the wrapping' – that’s the foundations, buildings, roads drainage infrastructure etc. for the technical facilities.
We need to be prepared for changes in the project and constant iterations in the design, because the technical solutions are often relatively new technologies, and we can be certain that there will be many changes in our design from concept to completion.
Working with new and developing technologies is really exciting but also means we need to be flexible and adaptable in our projects. Many things haven’t been done before, and I have to stay on top of everything and quantify options so our customers can make informed decisions.
I am lucky that I have so many great colleagues who are specialists in their respective fields, since I can’t possibly know everything. No matter what my query is, I can always find someone who knows a lot about that field and can help me understand it.
Part of my role is to act as a ‘filter’ to ensure that the specialists get the information they need to focus on a flexible and robust design without being disturbed by 'noise' in the project. I need to keep focus on the big picture but break it down so that the different disciplines can work together to ensure that we deliver to expectations.
For me, personally, this role means I am learning and developing new skills all the time as each project has new challenges.
