Ground-breaking partnership for green fuel production in Denmark

Wind energy Solutions

Green Fuels for Denmark is a unique partnership between Copenhagen Airports, A.P. Moller-Mærsk, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, SAS and Ørsted, focused on developing ground-breaking hydrogen and green fuel production facilities. The project will be developed in three stages:

  • Stage one, expected to be operational by 2023, will involve a 10 MW electrolyser producing green hydrogen for busses and trucks.
  • Stage two, expected to be operational by 2027, will involve a 250 MW electrolyser facility. This facility will combine its hydrogen output with captured carbon, to produce e-methanol for shipping, and e-kerosene for aviation.
  • Stage three, expected to be operational by 2030, will expand the electrolysis capacity to 1.3 GW and supply the transport sector with more than 250,000 tons of green fuels each year.

Green Fuels for Denmark will help to decarbonise the partners’ business, while contributing significantly to Denmark’s goal of reducing CO₂ emissions by 70% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. The fully scaled facility will reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 850,000 tons.

The partnership will position Denmark as a leader in the production of green fuels, and spearhead the maturation of the technology. COWI is a knowledge partner on the project, which in addition to the main partners is backed by Molslinjen, the City of Copenhagen, and the Capital Region of Denmark, with Nel, Haldor Topsøe, and Everfuel as partners.
