VINEYARD WIND – THE FIRST BIG OFFSHORE WINDFARM IN THE US

Energy Solutions

Vineyard Wind is the first large-scale offshore wind energy project in the USA. The name originates from its proximity to the well-known island Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

The site is located 23 km from the nearest shore and covers an area at about 650 km².'

When finished the project is expected to generate 2 gigawatt with the expectancy to provide energy for over 400,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by over 1.6 million tons per year.

COWI is the owners engineer and manages a number of packages which include off shore substations, transport and array cables. Additionally we are also the discipline lead on foundations and are overseeing the coordination of the connection to the electrical grid.

The project is an integral part of a bigger plan to establish 10 gigawatts of wind farms on the American northeast coast including the states Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland.
