Supporting the European Commission in developing the EU Taxonomy for marine transport

EU Taxonomy Solutions

The main purpose of this study was to assist the Commission in preparing insights into the field of maritime transport, for the analysis supporting the work of the technical expert group and the Platform on Sustainable Finance. This fed into the development of the EU taxonomy related to relevant economic activities in the water transport sector.

The results of this study assisted the European Commission in:

  • establishing technical screening criteria for environmentally sustainable activities in maritime shipping to determine the degree of environmental sustainability of an investment
  • establishing the essential characteristics of maritime shipping and port activities contributing to environmental objectives
  • supporting the establishment of common standards and methodology for measuring, assessing and accounting for the environmental sustainability of maritime investments and projects, and by so doing, contributing to more sustainable maritime shipping activities and facilitating the marine transport sector’s access to finance.
