an attractive, greener transportation option

The light rail system in the city of Aarhus – the first of its kind in Denmark - was established to handle the growing pressure on existing transportation infrastructure and offer the citizens an attractive, greener transportation option.

The new light railway connects Odder in the South and Grenaa in the North. It runs at up to 100 km/h outside the city centre and up to 60 km/h inside the city.

COWI led the consultancy at all project stages. Accepting the challenge of incorporating light rail into constricted urban spaces and narrow streets, we strived to create balance between the light railway, the dense urban infrastructure and the city’s existing transportation modes.
