360° PHOTO DOCUMENTATION OF ROADS AND THEIR SURROUNDINGS IN ICELAND

In cooperation with NCTech Ltd, COWI A/S ("COWI") conducts a nationwide photograph of roads and their surroundings with 360° panoramic images in Iceland.

The Street photos are recorded at street level from cars, on which a 360° camera is mounted. The Street photos are recorded with approx. 7 m between the images and for each image the camera position and time of shooting are recorded. The Street photos have a resolution of 60 Megapixels and all faces and license plates of cars are blurred.

WHERE TO PHOTOGRAPH?

The Street photo coverage includes all publicly accessible roads and parking lots in Iceland. Private roads are not photographed.

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHED?

The photography is done from cars driving on the road network. Everything that is visible from the road will thus be visible in the Street photos. Blur of all faces and license plates of cars is carried out as an irreversible part of data processing.

WHEN TO PHOTOGRAPH?

Photography is generally conducted in the period May-September. Some photographs are carried out outside this period, e.g. in connection with testing equipment or re-photographing stretches.

WHAT ARE THE STREET PHOTOS USED FOR?

Street photos are part of a commercial database, which is licenced to public authorities and private companies, who can use the images as documentation and to streamline workflows.

Street photos are used by, among others:

  • State authorities – as part of case management.
  • Municipalities – as support data case management, road condition registration, signs, etc.
  • Utility companies – for planning of repair works, assessment of visible installations etc.
  • Finance and insurance companies – including assessment of building conditions
  • Engineering companies

COWI makes Street Photos available through license agreements, which generally do not give customers the right to publish Street Photos on publicly accessible Internet pages, except for individual images to illustrate or document specific facts.
