The 921km Tanzam Highway is the most important trunk road in the Tanzanian network, linking the port of Dar es Salaam with several important tourist attractions.

In the 2000s, the Government of Tanzania implemented a reconstruction and upgrade programme, as the road had not received major repairs since its construction in the early 1970s.

COWI was responsible for improving traffic safety by strengthening and resurfacing 220 km of the road, one major bridge, and 12 medium-sized bridges.
