Transport model for new technological trends, Norway

Planning Solutions
‘New technological trends and their implications for mobility’ is a project to help Ruter (the overall public transport authority for Oslo and Akershus) to understand how urban planning and transport in the Oslo of the future can be developed.

The project is the continuation of a literature study in which three consulting firms were asked to look into this problem. COWI is now developing a transport model to help Ruter to understand the implications of new forms of transport and mobility.

The models will be based on traditional modelling tools, but supplemented with a module that can simulate changing trends brought about by the introduction of driverless vehicles, for example.

Norway has taken a leading role in the introduction of electric vehicles. If the same is true of other mobility trends, the model will be an important tool for understanding how driverless vehicles and car-sharing will affect our cities, transport and vehicle fleet.

One of the goals is for the knowledge from the models to help Ruter to develop a good basis for introducing self-driving units into the transport system of tomorrow.
